Pigeon Pea/Toor Crop Schedule 2026

Complete guidance for Pigeon pea/Toor crop planting including fertilizer, pest and weed management.
Introduction :
Pigeon pea is a legume crop that grows well in tropical climates. It enhances soil fertility by fixing nitrogen in the soil. Besides producing pulses, the straw is useful as fodder for livestock.
Climate and soil
Temperature | Rainfall | Soil | Temperature |
25–35°C suitable | 25–35°C suitable | Medium to black soil, well-drained. | 6.0–7.5 |
The soil should have good drainage, as waterlogging can lead to root rot.
Varieties and seed processing
Region | Recommended varieties | Duration (days) | Characteristics |
Vidarbha / Marathwada | Shri Ganesh, BDN-2, | 160-180 | Higher yield, |
Irrigated Areas | BDN-708, BSMR-853 | 150-160 | Dense trees, good grain quality. |
Seed Processing
- Seed Care : 25 grams/kg of seeds
- Liv Coat : 5 ml/kg of seeds
- Trichoderma viride : 10 grams/kg of seeds
- Rhizobium culture : 5 grams/kg of seeds
Seed Processing
- Planting period : End of June to first week of July
- Spacing : 90 x 30 cm (rainfed) / 120 x 45 cm (irrigated)
- Seed rate : 10–12 kg/hectare
- Sowing method : Furrow method
Irrigation management
- If the rainfall is insufficient, provide 2-3 supplementary irrigations.
- Water is most essential during the flowering and pod formation stages.
- Using drip irrigation saves water and allows for efficient use of fertilizers.
Fertilizer management
Fertilizer components | Quantity (kg/ha) | Time of application |
Nitrogen (N) | 10 | At the time of sowing |
Phosphorus (P₂O₅) | 50 | At the time of sowing |
Potassium (K₂O) | 25 | At the time of sowing |
Cow dung manure | 5-10 Ton | During pre-sowing plowing |
Biofertilizers: Apply Rhizobium + PSB @ 5 kg/hectare along with the seeds.
Water-soluble fertilizer schedule (WSF Schedule)
Stage | Fertilizer | Concentration (grams/liter) | Purpose |
Vegetative growth stag | 19:19:19 | At the time of sowing | 6.0 |
Flowering stage | 00:52:34 | 6.0 | Improved flowering |
Pod formation stage | 13:00:45 | 6.0 | Pod hardening and grain filling |

Micronutrient management
Ingredients | Solution (%) | Time / State |
Zinc sulfate | 0.5% | During the vegetative growth stage |
Boron | 0.2% | At the flowering stage |
Ferrous sulfate | 0.5% | If yellowing is observed on the leaves |
Pod hardening and grain filling | 1.0% | During the pod development stage |
Weed control management
The importance of weed control : During the first 45 days of the pigeon pea crop, weed competition stunts plant growth and reduces flowering. This can lead to a 20–35% reduction in yield.
Chemical weed control schedule
Stage | Herbicide Name | Dosage (liters/acre) | Application Time | Application Time |
|---|---|---|---|---|
Pre-emergence | PENDI-M | 2.5 | Immediately after sowing (within 24 hours) | Broad and grassy weeds |
(Post-emergence) | WEEDSUIT | 1.0 | 20–25 days after sowing | Broadleaf weeds |
For wheat weed control | ULTIMO SUPER | 1.0 | 25–30 days later | Grassy weeds |
Caution
The field should have slight moisture before spraying herbicides. Deep plowing should not be done after applying pendimethalin. Avoid spraying pendimethalin after the sprouts have emerged. When using Imazethapyr, the crop should be in the 2-3 leaf stage. Avoid spraying if there is strong wind or high temperature.

Integrated Weed Management (IWM)
- Row planting (60x20 cm) facilitates intercultivation.
- The combined use of PENDISHOOT 320 provides long-term control.
- Manual weeding – 25 and 45 days after sowing.
Straw mulching reduces weed growth by 90%.
